Mod «Realism Zombies [B42.20]» for Project Zomboid
Realism Zombies transforms zombie ecology and behavior in Project Zomboid through systems for hunger, scent, feeding, decomposition, weather, blood trails, and physical interactions. It is compatible with Build 42.20.4+ for both Singleplayer and Multiplayer.
Main Features:
- Hunger and Starvation: An optional individual hunger system gives each zombie a persistent food reserve. Hunger affects food priority, scent sensitivity, selectiveness, and search persistence. Starving zombies progressively lose strength and mobility, potentially slowing down, falling, and dying in the final stages. Only actively eating zombies recover satiety, which restores health lost to starvation but not player-inflicted damage.
- Corpses, Decomposition, and Feeding: Human and animal corpses can be detected and consumed. Body size influences scent, available flesh, eating time, and the number of feeding zombies. Corpses lose flesh through feeding and natural decomposition, eventually becoming skeletons. Decomposition stages (fresh, peak, fading, dry) alter scent and food value. Feeding produces blood effects and sound pulses that can recruit nearby zombies. Flies appear during strong decomposition stages.
- Ground Bait: Exposed meat, fish, organs, and other animal remains attract zombies based on distance, consumption time, size, condition, and satiety.
- Player Scent and Blood Trails: Zombies track players by scent without direct vision. Factors include blood on the player or equipment, wounds, bleeding, running, sprinting, fatigue, heat, and body temperature. Wound severity, infections, and bandage condition influence scent. Perfume and cologne temporarily mask scent, though water and rain accelerate their dissipation. Bleeding players leave temporary scent trails. A status panel displays total scent, body odor, blood, wounds, fragrance, rain, wind, and exposure details.
- Scent Physics and Climate: Rain, wind, temperature, snow, fog, humidity, storms, and indoor/outdoor environments influence scent and sound. Wind carries scent downwind, while barriers reduce detection. Each zombie has persistent olfactory sensitivity, requiring minimum signal and exposure time to target.
- Crowds and Physical Interaction: Zombies competing for corpses can push, stagger, and fall. They may trip over corpses and skeletons. Severely injured zombies may lose balance, and players can trip over bodies while running or sprinting.
- Zombie Activity Propagation: Thumping, breaking structures, and smashing glass attract other zombies, especially those with line of sight.
- Performance and Control: All major systems can be enabled, disabled, or adjusted via Sandbox options. A configurable work budget limits environmental searches per frame, and optional console diagnostics are available.
The mod includes 105 Sandbox options covering corpses, players, scent, climate, hunger, decomposition, feeding, blood trails, baits, crowds, stability, zombie activity, and performance. It is localized for all languages supported by the game.
